Clev $ Linx are west coast soul and funk outfit. Their last album was 2005 ‘Dope New Soul Cats’ choc-full of the sounds that has made the group a hit on the continental circuit since their inception on Linx short film ‘Fade to Black Blood Child’ soundtrack in 2004. That’s to say the music was full of talented North American artists energy; aimed straight at the dance floor. Since 2006 the duo has undergone a major personnel change. For reasons never fully explained (Linx failing health and miracle kidney transplant and Producer, guitarist, Chris Guy aka Clev’ left to follow his photography career), now replaced by Saxophonist vocalist Linx aka Rebelinx, big switch to music production that hasn’t really changed.

Album Review

Fade to Black UFO’ takes off exactly where ‘Blood Child’ album left off. The 11 track album is another collection of organic, old school soul with a very particular funky flavor and the reggae Dj styling of “Soldier Larry’ by Matt The Alien is every bit as feisty and convincing as Clev $ Linx signature vibes. What’s more Linx has penned almost all the lyrics on the set…with contribution artists Motoe1 & Zenobia Salik ‘Chunky Monkey’ not mention some re release from trombonist Andy ‘Mr Cakes’ on “Fat Soul” and Linx Sax solo ‘Clouds Uptown & “Black it”, a meandering jazz instrumental. Indeed, it was one of Linx classy songs, “Ghetto Española” that was chosen as the CDs heralding single. That one is a lovely, Beat Box old school groove and it’s one of the album standouts, though a little more restrained than cuts like ‘Alkapolka’. The album’s soul or rather pop driven ballad “Destiny Fate Collide” title cut which is given a definite soul flavor, but Linx handles it with conviction. It’s on the ballads, however, that Clev’ $ Linx shines and shows why the duo which features shimmering guitar by Chris Guy underneath Linx smoldering sax & vocals.
